Season One - 1979/80
Ref : T. Buyers Result : 0-0 Beckenham Place Park
Hance
Thornton Gatter R. Edmonds Llewellyn
Barnett Pickin Taylor
Chang-Leng Rutherford Green/Knight
A good performance for our first league game, we could have had two points (hit post twice, bar once and a goal disallowed for offside).
Best effort of the match was by Llewellyn, whose lob from his own half was only just over the bar after bouncing over the goalie.
Miller struck our post once, and had two shots cleared off the line, but anything less than a draw would have been an injustice to the
City side who had most of the ball.

Thornton Gatter R. Edmonds Taylor/Llewellyn
Chang-Leng Pickin Gardner
Barnett Rutherford G. Edmonds/Green
An undeserved defeat, the team playing well but giving away goals mainly due to a lack of understanding in the defence.
The winning margin flattered Ramblers, who scored the goals in the last twenty minutes.

A good game because we opened our goal scoring account, a bad game for the three goals which should not have been let in.
Elm Road, a young team, showed why they are bottom of the division, but the first City goal was a while in coming and was
scrappy, three shots blocked before Pickin finally shot home.

Saints surprisingly took the lead after 10 minutes in their first attack. Taylor pulled one back before half time, and the second half
saw City able to push defenders up into the attack as Saints never looked like scoring again. A fair performance by a City team with
3 players signed two days before the match to cover for injuries and absentees.

We had this match won until they turned up. Jets even had time to change their shirts, which arrived just before half time.
We didn't want to win this cup.

A team weakened by the non-appearance of players battled well to come back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 near the end, only
to give away a silly goal which was lobbed over the goalie who had advanced from his line for no real reason. Three players were
injured during the match but had to play on. The formation was in fact 4-2-4 with Rutherford in attack.

The best thing said about this game is that our shirts looked better than theirs. With the exception of Hance, no-one played
badly, it is just that the best team won. Hance had a bad game that happened to coincide with us playing the division leaders.
Croydon Strikers v City Beckenham Hospital Cup
Ref : - Result : 4-1 (1-0)
Green
Chang-Leng Thornton R. Edmonds Llewellyn
Barnett Pickin/Hance Gardner
Knight Rutherford Taylor
The rot set in when Thornton slid the ball past Green for the first goal to Strikers. A couple of strange decisions, including a
penalty, gave Strikers the match. Hance, coming on as substitute, showed an attack that seemed to have something else on
its mind how to score, but he goal was too late to swing the match City's way. High spots of the day were the cheerleaders on
the touchline and the showers afterwards.

Thornton Chang-Leng R. Edmonds Llewellyn

Rutherford Golding Taylor
Debut of the golden boy Golding brought immediate results with more bite up front. The constantly changing defence played well
as a unit, and the goals were always going to come. Gardner added more balance to the midfield and allowed Pickin more
freedom which he exploited. Once again, Taylor scored with a cross that became a shot after the match. Green had an appalling
game as linesman.
Scorers : Taylor 2, Pickin.

Some of us didn't realise until afterwards that Circle only had 9 men ! But the result was fair. Golding played well in attack, and
was not on the score sheet by inches many times. Best goal of the game scored by Pickin, Edmonds' free kick headed into the 6
yard box by Golding for Pickin to side foot home. The match was spoilt by the ref, who kept blowing when an advantage should have
been played.

A lot of complaints from C.U.M about Green's refereeing, but the result was due to their defence arguing. They scored soon after kick
off, but an offside not given by their linesman led to the equaliser. After half time, the late arrivals were brought on, but the game was
already City's. Talking point of the match was whether Edmonds handled the ball when he dived on it on the goal line. Green was on the
spot and did not give it, which earned him more abuse from one CUM player who said that he was a referee (and disagreed with every
decision).

Terry Golding decided to score a few goals in this match, making our goal difference more respectable. This result was due more
to slack defence than deadly finishing, with a few open goals being missed before the avalanche started.

Pickin and Golding played as if this was a race for top scorer, with Steve getting a hat trick. The defence was changed for the first time
in 4 weeks due to Gatters absence, but they were getting used to a new face every week.
Scorers : Pickin 3, Golding 2.

What a shocker ! Elm Road, bottom of the division, played havoc with a confused City. They led at half time, deservedly, but a heavy
downpour seemed to sap their strength and they allowed us back into the game, with the winner scored by Graham just before the
final whistle.

Hillyfields sent their report to the local rag, and it just about sums up the game. They should have been 4 or 5 up at half time, but they
could not put the ball in the net. Their goal came from a free kick on the edge of the box, the ball hitting Gardner in the wall and looping
over Hance into the goal via the crossbar.

Glanvill should have been several goals in front but they couldn't shoot straight. Everyone claimed our goal, insisting that they were the
last to touch the ball. A defensive error allowed Edmonds to get in front of goal with the ball and he nearly kicked it out of play, but he
remembered his training and placed the ball into the unguarded net. (Hance was having an argument with Llewellyn at the time).

City decided not to play in the first half, and Miller took advantage of that and some strange refereeing decisions. The second half saw a
different team performance, with the goal being breached on 5 occasions, but the referee disallowed two of them. A good move between
Barnett and Green ended with the ball in the net, only for the referee to give a penalty for a foul on Edmonds, the penalty being missed by
Jones. Miller played several first team players, who seemed to think that you can foul your way to victory, a fact that Jones discovered
when he was viciously hacked down in the centre circle with the ball in their penalty area.

A good team performance, spoilt only by Hance's inability to hold shots, which gave them a late equaliser and almost a two goal lead at
half time. Thornton headed off the line in the second half after a header went through the goalies hands. Gatter scored after Glanvill had gone
ahead, then Chang-Leng stubbed his toe to send the goalie the wrong way and score. This draw leaves us 3 points behind Glanvill with
2 games in hand.

This is the way to lose a promotion spot. We played terribly to drop 2 points to a team that we should have routed easily.
Golding missing meant that the attack lacked height and bite.

A great game, with the Calcutta team once again saying that we are the best team that they have played in our division.

5 superb goals made this game for City to remember, Pickin with a header and a great volley, Edmonds and Gardner with solo efforts

A re-arranged match that the league decided we must play after Ramblers defaulted. This is the first time that a ref has come into the
dressing room after the game and congratulated both teams on their performance. A bad defeat, especially when you consider that
Llewellyn saved the ball on the goal line twice before it was finally driven home.

Oh ! We needed at least a draw from this to prevent CUM taking 4th place from us, but it was not to be. The second half was played
mostly in their half, with city throwing everyone forward to try to salvage a point. Golding scored the second City goal, which ties him
Pickin for the top goal scorer trophy..
